The difference between a cartridge iron and a conventional one is where the heater sits. Here the element is inside the tip itself, millimetres from the joint, so it recovers temperature almost instantly instead of sagging when you touch a ground plane. In practice that means about two seconds to heat and three to melt solder, and no waiting between joints.
